Baby Boomer Work Outs

It seems like we are constantly bombarded with information regarding the need to be physically fit as we age. There are many reasons, from our overall health to the huge financial burden of a population of out-of-shape baby boomers. This article   has some great stats and facts regarding the aging process and where we are headed. Then, there’s another demographic that is beginning to show some interest in better fitness – look at my next blog about that one.

Don’t forget the hips!

There is a principle in physical therapy which states that we need proximal stability before we can have distal mobility. And what does that mean?

It means we must have a stable platform (hips/core) if we are to have mobility (strength, flexibility, etc) in our legs. This article – strong hips prevent injury – explains a little more.

Basically, a lot of lower leg injuries, particularly overuse injuries can be traced directly to weak hip muscles. I often have patients who have lower leg diagnoses who wonder why we are working on hip and abdominal strength – this is why – everything is connected, and a lot of it goes back to core strength.

Balance Screening, May 11

Balance is dependent on many factors, one of them being strength. New research has shown how a simple ankle exercise program can improve ones balance and decrease the chance of falls.
